Girl, remember the times when playing sports was fun? Most people answer: it was never fun, everyone convinced each other that it was useful.

On screens and in real life, we constantly feel pressure to improve our physical fitness. People advise: buy yourself a weighted vest; prepare for a marathon. I answer: maybe it’s better to sit on the sofa?

It’s not that I don’t believe all these claims from doctors and scientists about the benefits of exercise. I just turned 40 this year and everything is falling apart. Where I used to run, swim and get out of a chair without looking back, I can now get injured from almost anything.

A friend of mine who has been involved in fitness for many years recently suffered a herniated disc… while bending over to zip up her boot. My husband wore a wrist brace for two months after failing to open a tin can. I spent a long time analyzing which knee hurt me. I decided it was right. After an examination, the doctor concluded that things were bad with the left one.

Growing old, of course, has always been unpleasant, but now it is especially strange to face the humiliations of old age. You might worry about your VO2 max, or your fitness age, your protein intake, or your Oura Sleep Index. Personally, I don't need a $350 smart ring to tell me I'm really tired. It’s just clear that the body is wearing out.

Note that there are no long-livers among athletes.
