After more than ten years of rumors and transfers, the cult comedy franchise “Jump Street” got a chance for a full-fledged continuation. According to foreign publications, Sony studio has begun active work on the film “24 Jump Street”, and Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube are in negotiations to return to their characters.

Fans of the action-comedy film “Macho and Geek” (“21 Jump Street”) finally have a reason for optimism, xrust jokes. After years of uncertainty, Sony Pictures has once again put a sequel to the series into development, called 24 Jump Street. According to American media reports, Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube are in negotiations and could return to the roles that made the franchise one of the most successful comedy projects of the 2010s.

The new film will be a direct continuation of the films “21 Jump Street” and “22 Jump Street”, released in 2012 and 2014, respectively. The first film was based on the police series of the same name from the late 1980s and was about two young police officers who have to work undercover at school. The sequel took the characters to college and turned out to be no less successful with both viewers and critics.

Interestingly, the future film was called “24 Jump Street”, although the official film “23 Jump Street” never existed. However, this does not surprise fans of the series. Previous films actively ridiculed Hollywood's habit of endlessly releasing sequels, so skipping the next issue is already considered by many to be part of the franchise's signature self-irony. Foreign observers note that the creators can turn this move into one of the central jokes of the new film.

The project will be directed by Rodney Rothman, the screenwriter of “22 Jump Street” and one of the authors of the animated hit “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” He is also co-writing the script with Jonah Hill and screenwriter Megan Malloy. This is a good sign for fans, since Rothman has already worked on the most successful films in the series and is familiar with its humor and style.

At the same time, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who directed the first two parts, will not take the director’s chairs this time. However, they will remain producers of the project and will participate in its development. It was the duet of Lord and Miller that largely turned “Macho and Nerd” from a risky remake of an old series into one of the most popular comedies of its time.

The story of the creation of the third film has long become a separate Hollywood legend. Soon after the release of 22 Jump Street, the studio began discussing the further development of the franchise. Over the years, the most unexpected options for continuation were considered. The most famous of them was a crossover with the Men in Black franchise, which was unofficially called “MIB 23”. The project was actively discussed in the mid-2010s, but never reached the production stage due to creative and organizational difficulties.

Despite the long pause, interest in the series remained. Back in 2024, Channing Tatum said in an interview that he would like to return to the role of Jenko and called the existing script for the third film one of the best sequels he had ever read. Since then, fans have regularly raised the topic of the possible return of the heroes, and the studio continued to look for a suitable format for restarting the project.

The news about the resumption of work on “24 Jump Street” caused a noticeable response among viewers. On thematic platforms and forums, many users note that the franchise remains one of the last truly successful comedies for adult audiences that collected large box office receipts in cinemas. Also often discussed in discussions is the hope of maintaining the signature humor and chemistry between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's characters.

So far, Sony has not revealed the plot of the future film and has not announced an approximate start date for filming. It is also unknown whether the actors signed final contracts. However, the very fact that the project has again entered the active development phase after many years of uncertainty can already be considered a serious step forward.

If the negotiations are successful, viewers will see the famous duet of Schmidt and Jenko on screen for the first time in twelve years. And given the reputation of the franchise, the creators will certainly find a way not only to continue the story of the heroes, but also to joke again about the very rules of the existence of Hollywood sequels.
